No—as of October 31, 2026, you cannot book a Waymo passenger ride in Toronto. Its Toronto rollout begins with mapping and testing, not an operating ride-hailing service. Waymo’s current goal is to welcome its first Toronto riders in 2028, rather than start passenger trips this fall, according to its October 16 announcement.

For a trip now, leave Waymo out of your transport plan.

Why are Waymo vehicles on Toronto streets?

Waymo said manually driven vehicles would begin appearing within days of the announcement. Its initial work involves high-definition mapping of local streets, followed by testing with trained autonomous specialists behind the wheel to validate how its driving system handles Toronto’s conditions. These are preparation stages, not rides visitors can request. See Waymo’s explanation of the Toronto rollout.

A Waymo vehicle passing your hotel therefore does not mean your neighbourhood has passenger service—or that the vehicle is driving without a human.

What has to happen before booking opens?

Waymo must validate its driving system locally, and testing approval should not be confused with a passenger-service launch.

The Canadian Press, reporting through Global News, reports that Waymo says it has received Ontario’s approval to participate in the provincial autonomous-vehicle testing pilot. That is not an announcement that public ride bookings have opened.

Ontario’s Automated Vehicle Pilot Program requires a new application when an approved participant changes its testing plan, including a move to driverless testing. Driverless trials carry additional conditions, such as remote monitoring and control capability, a way to bring vehicles to a safe stop, and notification to affected municipalities.

The province currently lists the pilot’s end date as October 13, 2027, before Waymo’s 2028 first-rider goal. The testing framework and any future passenger-service authorization should therefore not be treated as the same thing. The target year is not a guaranteed opening date.

What should visitors do now?

Waymo directs interested riders to its Canada updates page. Signing up for news is not booking a Toronto ride.

For your actual itinerary, plan around transit, walking, taxis or conventional rideshare rather than a future robotaxi launch. Start by choosing a Toronto neighbourhood that fits your first-visit plan; a convenient base is useful now, regardless of when Waymo begins carrying passengers.
